Song I Wish I Had Written

This is one of my favorite themes on American Idol. It's always interesting to know the contestants' song choices. These choices reveal much about their musical identity, influences and general artistic direction.

When they did this theme again this year, I tried figuring out what my answer would be if asked the same question - what is that one song I wish I had written?

I'm more of a lyrics guy when it comes to songs so words are important to me. The first song that came tol mind was Flying Without Wings by Westlife. Haha. During my time as a Facebook addict, there were days when I'd just post lines from this song because I find them so beautifully worded and very meaningful. Haha. Waking up beside you top watch the sunrise on your face. It's the little things that only I know - those are the things that make you mine. You're the place my life begins and you'll be where it ends. Great lines, right?

But then, there's also this one song which, when I was younger, I do not understand at all. I love the melody. The instruments and vocals are very haunting and emotional, but I had no idea what the song means.

It's only now that I kind of understand what the song is about. With age, I've learned to relate to and appreciate the lyrics better. And the song, I found out, has so much depth, feelings, and a certain sadness. The worlds blend perfectly with the music and I'm just happy that I now get the story that this song is trying to tell.

So at this point of my life, this is the song I wish I had written - Jason Mraz' Absolutely Zero.

You. You were a friend. You were a friend of mine I let you spend the night
You see it was my fault. Of course it was mine.
I'm too hard at work. Have you ever heard of anything so absurd ever in your life.
I'm sorry for wasting your time.

See who am I to say this situation isn't great? When it's my job to make the most of it
Of course I didn't know that it would happen to me. Not that easy.

Hey what's that you say? You're not blaming me for anything well that's great
But I don't break that easy. Does it fade away?
So that's why I'm, I'm apologizing now for telling you I thought that we could make it
I just don't get enough to believe that we've both changed.

See who am I to say this situation isn't great? It's my time to make the most of it
Of course I didn't know that it would happen to me. Not that easy.
If all along the fault is up for grabs why can't you have it
If it's for sale what is your offer, I'll sell it for no less than what I bought it for
Pay no more than absolutely zero.

Well neither one of us deserves the blame because opportunities moved us away
And it's not an easy thing to learn to play a game that's made for two that's you and me
The rules remain a mystery. See how it's easy?

See who am I to say this situation isn't great? It's our time to make the most of it
How could we ever know that this would happen to me, not that easy, no
When all along the fault is up for grabs and there you have it
If it's for sale what is your offer, I'll sell it for no less than what I bought it for
Pay no more than absolutely zero.

Now, can anyone please give me tickets to the may 14 Jason Mraz concert at the Smart Araneta?
